To the Point

The riders are all adjusting to the "new normal" with the chip seal settling more on the pavement, but still no road paint lines for guidance. Times are about 30 to 60 seconds slower all around, but we believe fitness is still improving well with reported wattage numbers getting better with every turn. A recommendation for the riders safety- Keep your eyes up and ride as far to the "right of the road as is practicable", as stated in the Michigan Motor Vehicle code. This means riding closer to the rougher "bike lane", but riding a straight predictable line assists greatly with fellow riders and motor vehicles passing you safely.

Now - to the Point! The Points contest that is - Many more riders have finally reached the 10 ride minimum for their point totals to be displayed. Looking at the the points totals, I can safely predict that Dave Hietikko will win the Men - Open category, Tarra DaPrato the Women - Open category, Dave Kuilema the Men- 65+ and Michelle Perna the Burton category. I know this because they all have the required 10 rides with close to the "perfect" score of 10 points. But what about the other categories and placings?

For podium awards on August 29th, I'm going to use Webscorer's rankings on August 29th as listed on their website to determine the following award recognitions:

Men - Open            3 Places

Women - Open*    3 Places

Burton*                   3 Places

Merckx                    3 Places

Men - 65+               3 Places

 * - The Women-Open and Burton categories' placings will be determined by Webscorer's rankings, regardless whether 10 rides were achieved after August 29th. All the remaining categories have too few riders, and/or insufficient number of rides for any placement awards.

Contests worth noting: - the Merckx category will change dramatically once Richard Haslinger and Shane Wiersma reach the 10 ride minimum. One more ride and Richard will claim the top spot next week. Shane could take 2nd overall, but he cannot miss another night of riding! Shane - forget about the post race fatigue from riding Ore to Shore next weekend and just show up Monday the 15th to make your points count! One has to have one's priorities straight in life, and winning a podium spot at the Rapid Wheelmen Time Trials surely must trump a 53rd out of 200+ placing in some obscure age category - right?? If all that happens, then the contest for 3rd place likely goes to Tom Westrick. Vincent Nienhuis hopes Shane takes a week off - somehow.

Likewise, the contest for 2nd and 3rd in the Men - Open and Men - 65+ depends upon who shows up and how well they do. It'll be an interesting 2 to 3 weeks!

ANNOUNCEMENT: We will be having our post season celebration at Vitale's restaurant in Ada on August 29th starting at 7:30 pm. Open to riders, volunteers, and significant others. Club will cover pizza, the bar tab is all your own. Don't miss the free food and dazzling awards ceremony!!
